I studied (1978-1984) Sociology, Philosophy and History at the University of Konstanz and at the University of Sussex at Brighton (1980-1981). Since 1982 I worked as a student tutor in Konstanz, then became also teaching assistant in Sociology at the University of Sankt Gallen (Switzerland) until 1985, and, in 1987, “Scientific Assistant” at the Chair of Thomas Luckmann in Konstanz. My dissertation was finished in 1989. From 1990-1991 I joined the University of California in Berkeley (Anthropology Department) and did then my “habilitation” in Konstanz (finished in 1994). From 1995-2000 I had a Heisenberg scholarship which allowed me to work at the London School of Economics. The scholarship was interrupted by a research position at King’s College in London (1996-1998) and a Teaching Professorship at the University of Vienna. In 2000 I became professor for sociology of religion at the University in Zurich. Since 2002 I am Chair for General Sociology / Theories of Modern Societies at the Institute of Sociology (Technical University of Berlin). In addition to a series of other honorary positions (cf. academic honorary positions), I am teaching general sociology, sociological theory and sociology of knowledge as well as a series of other topics (culture, religion, qualitative methods) on which I am also publishing (cf. publications), and doing research on various issues (cf. research projects) Among the honorary offices (see 'honorary offices') my work as Board Member (Research) in the German Sociological Association and as Vice-Chair of the Collaborative Research Centre "Re-Figuration of Space" are currently most prominent. |
